Cleaning Vinyl Siding By Hand
Cleaning vinyl siding by hand is the simplest way to get rid of unwanted stains. Roll up your sleeves and follow these helpful tips.

Divide and Conquer: Clean Your Siding in Small Areas at a Time
man cleaning vinyl siding by hand with scrub brushDivide your house’s vinyl siding into 5 foot x 5 foot sections to work in small areas and easily identify what is clean and what is still dirty. Test a small section of the siding with your cleaning solution to make sure it works without damaging the paint or finish. Start scrubbing at the bottom of the house and work your way towards the top in order to avoid streaking. Once you have finished this vertical section, repeat until the side of the home is complete.

The Right Way to Clean Vinyl Siding
Dip the cloth or brush into the solution and scrub the siding until you see noticeable changes. Though you want to scrub hard to get rid of the grime, be gentle with the siding as too much pressure may crack it. Rinse with water from top to bottom often as you go to avoid uneven drying and spotting.
Q: I got rid of the rusty old gutters on my 1830s farmhouse. Now I need new ones. What should I replace them with?

I'd recommend that you install traditional half-round gutters in copper. The style is appropriate to your house, and you'll never have to worry about the copper rusting.

Hanging them is not hard, as long as you have a helper to lift and set the sections in place. But first you need to size up your situation so that you can order the parts. Ask yourself: What lengths do I need? Will each gutter get one downspout or two? And what about the fascia, where the gutters attach? Is it angled or plumb? Is it even sound? (If it isn't, repair it.)

When the parts arrive, locate the high point of the gutter's run—the farthest point from a single downspout or the midpoint between two. Then you can set the pitch, and the rest is all downhill.
